And of 21 finalists this year, only two were women?
Interestingly, the board that awards the prizes is composed of 5 women and 13 men.
Here's a list of Pulitzers given to women. Over the course of 90 years, women have received the Pulitzer in poetry only 24 times, in Fiction 27 times, in Drama 12 times, in General Nonfiction 11 times, in History 7 times, and in Auto/Biography 11 times.

All you have to do to understand the situation is look at the photo of the current Pulitzer board -- two-to-one men to women:

I'm willing to bet even that many women on their Board is fairly new and radical for them.
But things are changing, however slowly. At least now there are women on the Board.
I need to get this book.
